Drama & Dance

Drama and dance teaches girls to grow in confidence, find their creative voice and learn to see the world from another’s point of view.

The characterful buildings and grounds of Hanford provide an inspiring backdrop for various plays and productions throughout the year.

Each girl has the opportunity to ‘tread the boards’ during her time at Hanford Prep as there are plenty of productions to take part in each year.

Drama

Drama is an integral part of life at Hanford Prep, whether in lessons, activities or rehearsing for the plays that take place throughout the year.

Often in the summer the girls can be seen rehearsing under ‘The Rehearsal Tree’, surrounded by the glorious Dorset countryside. The Juniors and Fifth Form always look forward to performing in their own plays, and the senior production on Parents’ Day is a real spectacle. The latest musicals have included The Lion KingChitty Chitty Bang Bang and MatildaThe Nativity is a very special Hanford tradition reserved for our older girls, having been written especially for us in the 1960s. We still use the original costumes!

Trips to local theatres, such as Salisbury Playhouse and The Mayflower, in Southampton, are enjoyed by all the girls, and The Young Shakespeare Company regularly performs an interactive Shakespeare play in our Jacobean hall.

Dance

Dance at Hanford Prep has always been popular.  Dance lessons are taught by a specialist teacher who visits the school each week; girls learn a variety of different dance styles including ballet, tap and modern.

During the Summer Term girls work with their teacher on a choreographed piece that they perform on Parents' Day as part of our annual musical production.   In addition, throughout the year girls are given many opportunities to share their work and performances with their peers, building up their confidence and expertise.
